We all love a good salad, whether we are making it at home or ordering out. Side salad or main course? What truly satisfies your taste buds while eating a salad: the salad dressing or the toppings? As long as I could remember, a salad consisted of boring lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and croutons maybe as a bonus. Your dressings were minimal: Blue Cheese, Ranch, Italian, French, and Thousand Island. Now we have fancy dressings like Sesame Ginger, Raspberry Vinaigrette, etc., however Ranch has always been an all time favorite of North Americans. Ranch…yuck! That’s one dressing you can discontinue in my opinion.
I like my salads simple and not a ton of toppings. If you give me more toppings than lettuce, then I should not see a green leaf on my plate! My ideal salad would consist of mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, cranberries, croutons, shredded cheese, grilled chicken and my choice of dressing. Creamy dressings aren’t my favorite so I will always choose anything in the vinaigrette family. Now if I was eating out I would go to my favorite salad spot Chop’t. I order one salad the same way with my personal alterations of course. The Texas Po’Boy is my favorite with Sweet & Smoky Chipotle Vinaigrette. The ingredients are fried chicken, grape tomatoes, charred red onions, cheddar and romaine lettuce (pictured below). Simplicity at its best with a hint of heat from the Sweet & Smoky Chipotle Vinaigrette. While I like other salad friendly restaurants in the area like Sweet Green, Panera Bread, & Corner Bakery, Chop’t has always been my go-to.
Do your salad toppings consist of cucumbers, tomatoes, crumbled/shredded cheeses, peppers, or nuts? Or are they more specific like bacon, fried chicken, croutons, shredded cheese, and a boiled egg to make it look better (lol), and doused in dressing? Would you consider your salad healthy if you add a fried protein or drown it in your favorite salad dressing? I’ve observed salads that are covered in salad dressing and I’m confused as to what you are eating; salad or dressing?
I treat my salads like this motto: “Less is more!” Happy Eating!
