Crabs . . . are a seafood lover’s best friend! Let’s toss it back to Drink.Eat.Relax Chesapeake Crab & Beer Festival at the National Harbor in Oxon Hill, MD on August 18. Unlimited crabs, corn and cole slaw was surely a treat for my summer. My guest and I arrived at a decent hour to enjoy the sights and sounds of the feast ahead of us on this day. First up was the tastings of local spirits from beer, whiskey, moonshine, an assortment of plush rosé and much more. Sampling sweets and savory treats from the vendors throughout and started to dance our way to the line to get crabs.
Our tray included 6 crabs, corn on the cob, cole slaw, utensils, Old Bay, butter and vinegar. At first sight I was a little sad because I didn’t have the condiments to make a sauce that I would normally have on the side with my crabs. Those condiments are the infamous mayo, ketchup and mustard . . . I do add other things in it as well but that is my little secret! Any who let the feasting begin. The crabs were big, succulent, flavorful, juicy and meaty! The corn was sweet and the cole slaw was good too. I enjoyed the crabs so much that I made my own sauce to make it work. And truthfully, they were so flavorful that my homemade sauce wasn’t required! The crabs were scrumptious with each bite that I didn’t want to walk away, but I sat and pigged out until my tummy popped! As an avid crab lover, I typically don’t get full from eating crabs, but this time I shocked myself and was completely full after eating maybe 10. My counterpart ate until he popped as well lol.
The conversation between him and I was quite comical as we enjoyed every bite reminiscing on our crab stories throughout our lives. We are both Washingtonians and grew up eating crabs since we were in our single digits and we both AGREED that these are the best crabs we have ever eaten. The famous blue crab is popular around our parts of the world and we eat them all year round. The Wharf is our local seafood market where you can purchase fresh seafood. It is situated in our southwest corridor of the city and housed some of the best seafood us Washingtonians have grown to love. Summers at the wharf were memorable; taking crabs to go to cook yourselves or waiting in the line and listen for your number, tell them the spice level you would like on your crabs and you would turn around and go. Or watching the locals enjoy fresh oysters . . . never knew why they liked them so much then, but now I have an appreciation for this fine aphrodisiac too! Eating crabs was a social gathering with friends and family. Chatting and chewing the day away. Some are even in competition with each other to see who could eat the most out of the dozens that were purchased.
Aaaahhh the memories and enough of that history lesson. Good job to Drink.Eat.Relax for this awesome feasting on that great summer day. As I bring this throwback Thursday edition to a close, I hope that everyone go out and partake in some crabs ASAP!
